Health & Safety
Concussion Protocols: GUG’s concussion protocols are in line with the NYC Department of Health’s, which are as follows. All protocols are followed by the school nurse, who is employed by the NYC Department of Health.
- Contact the parent/guardian about any head injury.
Call 911 if accompanied by loss of consciousness (even if brief), deformity of the skull, hematoma or laceration of the scalp, persistent vomiting, severe or persistent headache, dizziness, fluid from nose or ear, paralysis, difficulty in talking, or unusual sleepiness and/or disorientation/confusion. - Apply pressure to bleeding lacerations.
- For mild head injuries (no physical findings and student is alert), students may return to the classroom and the teacher notified to observe for changes in behavior and to refer that student back to the medical room as needed. Nurse issues a Head Injury Form to the family.
